Read Receipts for Apple Mail

Apple Mail does not provide universal read receipts for ordinary email accounts. Mail Tracer fills that gap by adding open tracking and notifications to emails sent through Apple Mail.

Does Apple Mail support read receipts?

Apple Mail does not include a standard read-receipt button that works consistently across Gmail, iCloud, Outlook and other providers. Traditional read-receipt requests can also be rejected or ignored by the recipient's email application.

How Mail Tracer adds read receipts

Mail Tracer adds a tiny tracking image to a message. When the recipient opens the email and their application loads that image, an open event is recorded. You can then see when the open happened and how many opens were detected.

Delivery receipts versus read receipts

A delivery confirmation only means that the receiving mail server accepted a message. A read receipt or open event indicates that the message's content was loaded. Neither method can guarantee that the recipient carefully read or understood the message.

Use Apple Mail as usual

Connect your existing account and continue composing through Apple Mail. Mail Tracer works in the background and provides the tracking history and notifications.

When read receipts may not work

  • The recipient blocks remote images
  • The email is viewed as plain text
  • A privacy proxy loads the tracking image
  • A company security scanner preloads links or images
  • The recipient is offline when viewing cached content
